How does this resource capture student data?

The created digital resource is able to capture individual student data in two learning
opportunities associated with the Phonological Awareness skills development. This individual
student data will give teachers the ability to assess the students capability to comprehend
rhyming words and syllables associated to the Foundation Year Australian Curriculum. The
interactive data collection has been created to determine the students competency with question
based at Foundation Year level standard or above standard. Once students have completed the set
questions based around syllables and rhyming words the teacher can cite the individual students
answer through their personal email. This resource can be continually alternated to suit various
early literacy skill development areas and assessment data to suit the Australian Curriculum
learning areas.
What are the current literacy theories relating to the digital resource and interactive
activities?
The interactionism theory relates to the digital resource and interactive activities as
language and sounds are learnt through social experiences (Cox, 2011). The interactionism
development theory intertwines into the nativism theory, as students in their early years are
receptive to language development as the brain is still developing. It is therefore vital that
children be surrounded and influenced by age appropriate correct language which has been
displayed throughout the digital resource.
What is childrens emergent and early literacy?
Students emergent and early literacy at Foundation Year has already been developing since birth
and is continually advancing further. Early literacy during this pre-school stage relies on

interactions and relationships within the social context to progress a childs thinking and learning
about the world (Government of South Australia, 2007). Emergent and early literacy investigates
the experiences that support literacy, the individual students contribution and the association
between the Australian Curriculum literacy outcomes and the diverse experiences that guide
those early literacy-learning outcomes (Government of South Australia, 2007). Emergent early
literacy is considered to have two interrelated areas of development these being written language
awareness and phonological awareness which have both been incorporated into the digital
resource and interactive activities (Government of South Australia, 2007).
How does this resource support emergent and early literacy learners?
The design of this resource supports the development of emergent and early literacy learners by
having chosen a book that reads aloud and focus on rhyming but has also now been made to
include syllable involvement (Seely Flint, A., Kitson, L., Lowe, K., & Shaw, K., 2014).
This digital resource has recognised that literacy includes both linguist and non-linguistic forms
of communication and this has been demonstrated by incorporating written language, spoken
language and images throughout the digital resource (Government of South Australia, 2007). The
digital resource also provides students with the opportunity to develop their partnerships
between ICT and literacy which will enhance their future creative learning opportunities (Shuker
& Terreni, 2013). Another beneficial concept of this digital resource is the ability to have access
from any computer whether that be from school or home.
How does this resource support for the awareness of cultural and linguistic differences?
This digital resource supports and fosters cultural and linguistic differences by having
chosen a text that recognises and reflects the cultural and ethical diversity that is now often found

within the Australian Classroom. The initial story on the digital resource is based in the African
Jungle which is enabling the development of a unit and activities relating to early literacy as well
as educating students about diverse cultural backgrounds. This text could be reviewed within the
classroom environment as a future class discussion or planned activity so students learn accept
and appreciate diverse cultural backgrounds not only in the classroom environment but society.
As students get older they will begin to understand and grasp the need for learning about other
cultures within the classroom. The digital resource is easily adjustable to suit individual students
diverse learning needs depending on their skill level.
