LESSON PLAN OUTLINE

Date: September 17th, 2015. Time: 2:05-2:30

A. TITLE OF LESSON: Communities Community Helpers


B. CONTEXT OF LESSON
During this lesson, students will learn about the community helpers. As a whole group, we
will go over each community helper and identify how they contribute to our community.
Then, the students will engage in a community helpers matching game where the students
will match community helpers with what they do. If time, students will complete a matching
community helper worksheet.

I will assess students through observation and their participation in the activity. Each student
will match community helpers with what they do. Each student will choose a community
helper they would like to be at the end of the class. (This will prepare me for tomorrows
activity).
F. MATERIALS NEEDED
1. Smart Board
2. Community Helpers Book
3. Community Helpers Matching Game Who Question Card Game
G. PROCEDURE
Prep:

Get all materials


Print matching game

Engage:
Read students a book on community helpers
Ask and discuss questions about the book
Implementation:
Tell the class how are going to learn about different community helpers who help our
community.
Read/Go over Community Helper Book
Show students different community helpers and describe each. Tell students how they
help our community and what they do.
o Make sure you tell students that all of the community helpers you mention can be
girls OR boys.
Game: Pass out community helpers to each student and tell them which person they are
orally since some cannot read well.
I will be the question reader. For example, Who do you see when youre sick?
A student with the doctor card will then say, I am a doctor.
Continue reading out the questions until every student has gone.
Closure:
If you still have time at the end of class, have students individually work on a matching
community helper worksheet (matching community helpers with the tools they use).
*Begin thinking about a community helper you would choose to be when you grow up,
because tomorrow you are going to write about it.
H. WHAT COULD GO WRONG WITH THIS LESSON AND WHAT WILL YOU DO
ABOUT IT?

During the read-aloud, students may not keep their hands to their selves, or they may
be talkative.
o I will move students around if need be
Students may not seem to be engaged
o I will quickly engage students by asking them a question
During the game, students may not know what their assigned community helper does.
o I will know what community helper each student has. I will explain to them in
greater detail what their community helper does.
