Second Grade math lesson plan

Standards: 2.MD.C.8 Measurement and Data.
Work with time and money. Solve word problems involving dollar
bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using $ and symbols
appropriately.
Example: If you have 2 dimes and 3 pennies, how
many cents do you have?
Resources: I got the idea for this lesson by observing another math
related lesson
were the students used numbers, pictures, and words
to explain answers for math. I felt the students had a better
understanding of the math because they explained their work in
different ways. I wanted to create a lesson that
focused on
money, I feel this a topic many second graders struggle with. I
created the worksheets myself using Microsoft word to help with
the word
art and shapes.
Objective: 1. Students will be able to show different ways of making
change; using
manipulatives, pictures and words to explain how
they go their answers.
-Students will be able to write the correct symbols for each unit
of money.
Procedure: I will begin this lesson by handing out the worksheets. I
will have students put their name and date at the top. We will then
read the directions together as class. I will explain to them that the
worksheet has three parts; part one- they must use plastic money and
show one way of making each of the numbers. Then they will go onto
using pictures to write different ways of making change. Finally, the
students will solve the word problems using both pictures and words.
They can also use the manipulative for this as well. I will start the
lesson by using a number that will be used to explain the directions
through the modeling process. I will write 43 on the board so
students know this is the number we will work on together. I will show
them using the coins, that there is many ways to make change. I will
explain that everyone may have different answers, as there is more
then one way to make change. We will then go onto the second part,
were I explain to them I want them to use one of the ways they made
change and write it using the appropriate symbols. (Q, D, N, and P) I
will model this by asking them to give me the letter of the coin so I can
write it on the board. (This answer will vary but should be Q, D, N, P, P,
P)
Then we will continue onto the word problem. I will give them a
practice problem on the board using the 43, Alice went to the store

and had 2 quarters, 1 dime, 3 nickels, and 2 pennies how much money
was in her pocket? I will ask students to help me draw the coins on
the board by telling me what they think Alice has. I will draw a
representation of her money on the board. Then I will write in words
Alice has 77 because 3 quarters is 50, 3 nickels is 15, and 2
pennies equal 2. I added these numbers together and got 77. I will
then tell the students it is their turn, and ask them if they have any
question. I will then distribute the money and allow them to start. I will
tell them if they have any question while they are working they will
need to raise their hand and I will help them.
Assessment: I will be assessing the students by collecting their
papers and seeing if they completed the worksheet correctly. I will pay
close attention to their actual answers and if they know how to use the
appropriate symbol.
