Graphic Identity: Final Project

Overview
The purpose of the assignment is to explore the intersection of language and culture, and its
place within ones identity. Upon reading American Born Chinese, we have explored the many
ways in which Jin Wang searches for his identity in the context of an American Born Chinese
male. Further, we will explore the ways in which the graphic novel functions, and its place
within storytelling as a whole.
Goal
How does your race, class, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, language, culture,
socioeconomic status, religion, or ability contribute to your identity?
You will explore this question through the following:
Construct at least a 16 frame graphic narrative (hand-drawn, computer images,
photographs etc.) of a specific instance in your life in relation to the question.
Write a 1-2 page response (double spaced, 12 pt, Times New Roman) reflecting
on your graphic narrative and its relation to American Born Chinese.
Present your graphic narrative to the class

To what extent is Jin Wang influence by his own language and culture? How about the culture
of others?
In what ways are you influenced by your language and culture? What specific instances have
impacted you?
How does the graphic narrative promote the discovery of language, culture and identity?
