UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES

DEPARTMENT OF STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING

CVEN9806 Prestressed Concrete
Major Assignment 2014
A high rise open office block is to be built in the outer regions of Sydney. The structure
is braced against wind load by the action of shear walls. Enclosed are the preliminary
architectural drawings showing the typical floor plan. The floor system adopted for the
floors is a one-way post-tensioned slab system supported on post-tensioned bands. The
client seeks your advice in order to estimate the cost of this floor.
The following data should be used in your design:
Fire Rating Period of the Floor System: 90 minutes.
Floor Design Loads:
a)
b)
c)

Imposed Dead Load (Ceiling Services, Floor Finishes,

Partitions etc.)
= 1.5 kPa
Live load
= 3 kPa
Faade load= Ignore Faade loading

Assume all columns are 600 square and made of 40MPa concrete. Floor to floor height is
4m and you need to limit your beam depth to 400mm max.
Concrete Strength; f c' 40 MPa; fci' 22 MPa;
Lateral Loads are not included in the floor design;
Limit the total long termand incremental deflection to 25mm or span/250 which ever
smaller.
Your firm (groups of no more than 3 students) is required to provide the full working
drawings and hand calculations for the continuous band beam along the grid line 2 and
the one-way slab between grid lines A-A1 and grid lines 1-4.
Note: Your RAPT analysis and models for slab needs be between grid 1 to 9. Your RAPT
models needs to be compatible with RAPT version in UNSW computer labs.
The submission should be bound into a manila folder, including all drawings. The format
is to be recognised report format (i.e. table of contents, summary, etc.) The assessment
will depend on the thoroughness, clarity, presentation and quality of the design and
especially the merit of the working drawings.
Final submission - Week 13 Wednesday 4th June 2014
