In the above situation, each pan contains the same number of ____________, so why dont
they weigh the same? Because the ____________________ _____________ of
magnesium is ________________ that of carbon, meaning that each Mg atom is TWO
TIMES heavier. This would explain why one mole of Styrofoam cups dont weigh the
same as one mole of books, although they contain the same ___________________ of
objects.
FINDING THE MOLAR MASS OF A COMPOUND
Find the mass of each atom in the formula and then find the total sum of the masses.
EXAMPLE:
Find the molar mass of sucrose, C12H22O11
12 C atoms x 12.0g = 144.0 g
22 H atoms x 1.0 g = 22.0 g
11 O atoms x 16.0 g = 176.0 g
molar mass = 342.0 g
MOLAR MASS
EXAMPLE:
Find the molar mass of ammonium sulphate, (NH4)2SO4
2 N atoms x 14.0g = 28.0 g
8 H atoms x 1.0 g = 8.0 g
1 S atoms x 32.1 g = 32.1 g
4 O atoms x 16.0 g = 64.0 g
molar mass = 132.1 g
