Thisartifactbestalignswithstandardthreebecauseitdemonstratesafocusofstudent
achievementandsuccessinanontraditionalareaandforallstudents.TheHourOfCode
activitieswereplannedtobeageandabilitylevelappropriateforallstudents.Withthehelp
oftechnology,thisallowedustointroduceourstudentstoacareerfieldthatmanyknowvery
littleabout,orhavemisconceptionsof.ThegoaloftheHourofCodeinitiativeistopromote
diversitywithincomputersciencecareerstobetterrepresentourpopulationinthecomputer
sciencecareerfield.Forthisreasonallactivitiesareplannedandexecutedwiththeintentto
becompletedbyallstudentsofvaryingbackgrounds,genderandethnicity.Programssuchas
thesehelptoexposeourstudentstoavarietyofcareersandbetterhelpspreparethemfor
careersofthefuture.
Thisartifactdemonstratesmyabilitytodesignandimplementanageandabilityappropriate
learningactivityforallstudentswithinthedistrict.ThroughtheactivitiesoftheHourof
Codeeventstudentswereabletodevelopandgrowskillsregardingcomputerscience.The
scopeoftheprojectisthehelpdiversitythecomputersciencefieldbypromotingcomputer
scienceasapossibleoccupationforunderrepresentedgroupssuchasfemalesandminority
populations.Allofthiswasaccomplishedthroughtheuseoftechnologythatstudentscan
continuetouseoutsideoftheschooldayandforfutureHourofCodeeventsinorderto
sustainstudentlearninginthecomputersciencefield.
WhatIlearnedaboutadministrationfromthisexperience:
ManypeopleassistedmeinordertomaketheHourofCodeeventpossibleforthe20152016schoolyear.
Ilearnedthatnoinitiativecanworkinaschooldistrictwithoutthecooperationandeffortsofmanypeople
includingadministration,teachers,supportstaffandoftentimesthestudentsthemselves.TheHourof
CodeeventatCubaCitySchoolswassuccessfulduetothepassionandcommitmentofmanypeople.This
wasaprogramthathelpedtoexposeourstudentstoafieldofstudyaswellasmanycareeropportunities.
Administratorsdonothaveasstrongofaconnectionwithstudentsandcurriculumasclassroomteachers
doandneedtobesupportiveofinitiativesthatteachersmaywishtobringtotheschooldistrict.Ifeelthat
notonlysupportinrunningaprogram,butalsotheunderstandingthatitmaynotbesuccessfulinitsinitial
attempt.
WhatIlearnedaboutmyselfasaprospectiveadministratorasaresultofthisexperience/artifact:
AsaprospectiveadministratorIlearnedthatitisessentialtoworkwithothersevenifpriorrelationships
hadnotbeenbuilt.IwaspassionateabouttheHourofCodeproject,butinordertomaketheeventworkI
neededtoworkincooperationwithothers.Insomecasesmyrelationshipswiththesepeoplewere
nonexistentorevenstrainedpriortoworkingontheHourofCodeevent.Asprofessionalswewereable
toworkpastthesedifferencesinordertocreateasuccessfulevent.
Ialsolearnedthateventssuchasthesecanbeusedasagreatprogramintroductiontostaffwithina
school.Theteachersofthedistrictwerereluctantwithassistingincomputerscienceactivitieswhenthe
HourofCodewasfirstproposedtothem.Afterdifferenttypesofcommunicationincludinginperson
meetings,emailandphonecallstheteachersbecameincreasinglyenergeticabouttheprogram.Upon
completionoftheHourofCodeeventmanyteachersexpressedaninterestinfurthertrainingincomputer
scienceeducationinordertocarryonthesetypesofactivitiesandlearningthroughouttheschoolyear.
