CUSTOMS AND MANNERS

Impacting Customer
Service
Meetings start with the shaking of
hands and a slight nod of the head. Do
not be overly vigorous when shaking
hands as the Chinese will interpret this
as aggressive.
Chinese are not keen on physical
contact-especially when doing
business. Do not put your arm around
someones shoulders.
Saying thank you is seen as being
over polite and without meaning.
Business cards are exchanged on an
initial meeting. Make sure one side of
the card has been translated and
printed in Chinese letters using gold ink
as this is a favorable color.

Receiving Gifts

Doing Business

If you receive a gift, appear thankful,

and dont open it until later, as this
is bad manners in China.

Relationships are very formal in

China. Keep dealings at a
professional level.

Gifts should be exchanged for

celebrations, thanks for assistance
or as a sweetener for future favors.

Establish a intermediary contact

to act as a reference, be your
interpreter and navigate you
through the bureaucracy, legal
system and local business
networks.

Even numbers are considered good

luck, with number four being the
exception. It is appropriate to send
one gift or send them in pairs.
Some common gift giving ideas are:
books, music CDs, perfumes,
cigarettes and candies from your
country.

Meetings must be made in

advance. Avoid all national
holidays, especially Chinese New
Year.

TELECONFERENCE

China

CULTURAL CONSIDERATIONS
Be careful when complimenting someone's possessions or they may feel that you want it, and the host is
required to be very accommodating to the guest in Chinese culture and will feel obligated to give it to you.
The oldest person is always greeted first as a sign of respect.
Be punctual because it is considered a virtue in China. It shows respect for others.
At a banquet or on formal occasions, its polite to sample all the dishes, and at the end of the meal leave a
little on the plate to demonstrate the generosity of the host.

I FEEL THIS WAS A GOOD PROJECT. I LEARNED A

LOT ABOUT MODELING PROFESSIONALISM IN THE
WORKPLACE AND MANAGING ADMINISTRATIVE
PROJECTS ESPECIALLY IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY. BY
APPLYING TECHNOLOGY SKILLS IN THIS PROJECT, I
COULD DEMONSTRATE EFFECTIVE WORKPLACE
COMMUNICATIONS.
