Diseases of the Middle Passage
DIRECTIONS: In groups of four, research a disease that infected slaves on ships during
the middle passage. Create a Google Slides presentation and present it to the class.
Choose from the following diseases/infections:
- Smallpox
- Scurvy
- Malaria
- Yellow fever

Hookworm
Dysentery (the flux)
Measles

Your Google Slides must include a page on:


1. Title slide
2. Five vocabulary words from your presentation.
3. Describe the disease and what it does to the human body.
4. What are the symptoms?
5. What are its causes?
6. Transmissionhow do humans get it?
7. What is the treatment now? Was there a treatment then?
8. All other relevant facts.
9. At least two sources.
10. Pictures of the illness (these can be on a single page, or spread throughout the other pages).

- The presentation must be a minimum of 8 minutes long. All group members are required to present.
Each group must divide up the work in the group so that each person is responsible for
researching and composing part of the Google Slides.
- FAILURE TO COMPLETE THE ASSIGNMENT MAY RESULT IN A FAILING GRADE FOR
THE CLASS.
- This project is worth 150 points.
