InitiativestoImprovetheEfficiencyofCoalBasedPowerPlants

Indiahasabundantdomesticreservesofcoal.Inordertosecureenergyrequirementofthecountry,coalbased
generationwillremainimportantforpowergenerationofIndia.ThiswasstatedbySh.PiyushGoyal,Ministerof
stateforPower,Coal&NewandRenewableEnergy(IC)inawrittenreplytoaquestionintheLokSabhatoday.
TheCentreforScienceandTechnologyinitsreportGreenRatingofCoalBasedThermalPowerPlantshas
givensuggestionsforimprovingtheefficiencyofthermalpowerplantsinIndia.
The Minister further stated that Government of India has already taken following initiatives to improve the
efficiencyofcoalbasedpowerplantsandtoreducethecarbonfootprintofthepowersector:
(i) Out of about 87,000 MW thermal capacity under construction, about 48,000 MW is based on supercritical
technology,whichuseslesscoal.
(ii) Supercritical technology has been made mandatory for Ultra Mega Power Projects (UMPPs) being
implemented.
(iii)In13thPlan,allcoalfiredcapacityadditionshallbethroughsupercriticalunits.
(iv)AnAdvancedUltraSuperCriticalTechnologyR&DProjecthasbeenapprovedbyGovernmentatacostof
Rs.1500 Crore involving BHEL, NTPC and Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) to achieve
higherefficiency,reducecarbondioxideemissionsandcoalconsumptionforcoalbasedpowerplants.
(v)Renovation,ModernizationandLifeExtensionofoldthermalpowergeneratingunitsandretirementofold
andinefficientthermalgenerationunits,inphasedmanner,isbeingundertaken.Atotalcapacityof3,000MW
hasbeenretiredtilldate.
(vi)GovernmentofIndiahaveissuedpolicyonautomatictransferoflinkageincaseofscrappingofoldunits
andreplacingthemwithnewsupercriticalplants.
(vii)DoublingcoalcessfromRs.100pertonnetoRs.200pertonneforfundingprojectsunderNationalClean
EnergyFundasannouncedintheBudgetSpeechof201516.
(viii)Increasingtheshareofrenewableenergyintheoverallpowergenerationinthecountry.

(ix) Perform Achieve Trade (PAT) Scheme under National Mission on Enhanced Energy Efficiency is under
implementationbyBureauofEnergyEfficiency(BEE).InthisScheme,individualtargetforimprovingenergy
efficiencyhasbeenassignedto144numberofthermalstations.
