How to draw a Strophalos (Hekate's Wheel) symbol

by Rabenzahl, Oktober 2015

This how-to was part of a
creative community project
initiated by torchbearer
Hester Aria. Many people
today use the Strophalos
(Hekate's
Wheel) as a symbol of our
goddess, but find it
challenging to create it
themselves. So the idea to
provide a step-by-step tutorial
emerged.
Tools
For my example on paper I used a soft pencil, a felt
pen, water based colours, an eraser, a ruler and a
compass.

Step 1
Find your centre and cast 2 circles. No, really. Mark
your mediums centre and draw the inner and the
outer circle. I used a compass, but any round dish in
the right size will do. Or you can try it freehand.

Step 2
Starting at the centre, divide your medium in 3 equal
parts. make sure you can easily erase the lines later,
so use a very soft pencil.

Step 3
Take one of your marked thirds. A bit below the outer
circle draw the top curve. Below that, add two
opposing "U" shapes.

Step 4
Connect the top curve with the upper ends of the "U"
shapes. You now have one complete slope of the
wheel.

Step 5
Repeat steps 3 and 4 on the remaining thirds.

Step 6
Connect your 3 slopes. The main part of the
Strophalos is complete. Now you can add the inner
and outer circles and the star in the centre.
Erase the pencil lines and colour your Strophalos.
