Demonstration of an

all-optical quantum
controlled-NOT gate

By
David Ray & Nick Johnson

Introduction
What am I presenting?

Classical Controlled-NOT
To show the classical C-NOT Gate photons are
prepared in the Logical Basis states

i.e.

Control (C)

(Poincare

Sphere)
Notice that this is analogous to the classical XOR
Gate Output

Target (T)

Classical C-NOT Results

Theoretical

Experimental

For states where the control state input

is zero there is

veryNotation:
good agreement
with the theoretical (ideal) case.

For states where the control state input is one there is

a bigger discrepancy from the ideal case.

Why the Discrepancy?

For

only a single classical interference is required for

correct operation
For

an additional non-classical interference is

required for correct operation

Is There Entanglement?

To
forplot
entanglement
the C

we will measure

to be
set to
the
visibility.
As the

state then the state
approximately 100% this is entanglement
For each of these states
we are going rotate the Tout HWP

from 0 to 90 and plot the number of co-incident events

occurring in a given time
out

Creating Bell States

Bell states are maximally entangled state i.e. they cannot be
decomposed into a product of states. They can be produced
by passing a superposition into the control input

Control (C)

Target (T)

Quantum State Tomography

We can experimentally characterise a state by using
Quantum state tomography

Fidelity is the measure of the similarity between two

quantum states. In our case between our measured
state and its ideal state

Conclusion
What does this all
mean?
