Time: 2 periods (80 minutes)
OBJECTIVES (Visual Arts)
Ontario Curricular Expectations: (Overall expectation D1. Creativity and Presenting): apply the
creative process (see pages 1922) to produce a variety of two- and three-dimensional art works, using
elements, principles, and techniques of visual arts to communicate feelings, ideas, and understandings;
Specific Expectation (D1.4 page 118): use a variety of materials, tools, and techniques to determine
solutions to design challenges.
Lesson Objectives:
1. Create a motif using a few different examples of rhythm (i.e. random, regular, and alternating)
2. Be able to understand the different types of visual rhythm
3. Understand the artistic technique of rubbing
MENTAL SET

Estimated time: 5 Minutes

Discussion: ask students about the types of visual rhythm that can be represented. Introduce the
concepts of random, regular, and alternative rhythm.
STATED OBJECTIVES AND PURPOSE: Estimated time: 1 Minutes
Today you are going to:
Create a motif using a few different examples of rhythm
INPUT/ MODELLING/ DEMONSTRATION: Estimated Time: 2 minutes

Provide a variety of examples about different examples of visual rhythm.


PRACTICE

Estimated time: 65 minutes

Students are to use each of the three visual rhythm and


use the rubbing technique to create their different
motifs. Students are to use the rubbing technique on
pressed leaves.

CLOSURE :

Gallery Walk: students are to walk around the classroom and see how their peers represented the
different visual rhythms.
