Students will chose an appropriate colour and shape that resemble the
toppings of a pizza. They will construct their own pizza and count the
number of shapes they have.
Each student needs:
1 Sheet of red, white, yellow, green, brown and grey construction paper
1 Pair of scissors
1 Glue stick
1 Pencil
1 My Shape Pizza Has identification cards
Each table needs:
An example pizza
1 Bucket of crayons

(how will you hook

students? )

Time: 3 mins

March 9, 2016
Grade 1
17-20

Students will identify shapes, count the amount of shapes they use and
chose colours resembling toppings.

Introduction

Date
Grade
Time

Each table will have an example shape pizza and crayons, and the
other materials will be distributed.
Think: Ask the students to identify the different shapes while
drawing them on the whiteboard and writing the name of it below.
Pair: Pair together and think about what kinds of pizza toppings the
shapes could resemble and what colour would be used.
Share: As a group review each shape and what ingredient. Identify
the appropriate colour and have the students colour the shape on
the sheet for reference.
Explain the craft and how to assemble the pizza and show them an
example. Explain that the pizza only has one red circle for crust and
one yellow hexagon for cheese. Students can use any other
combination of toppings as long as they use every ingredient. After
they must fill out the number on the sheet and sign their name.

Preparation (6 mins)
Ensure that everyone has supplies and understand the task
Have students cut out the large red circle first, and then the yellow
hexagon and glue the two together.
Next cut out red circles for peperoni, white rectangles for onion, grey
pentagons for mushrooms, brown triangles for sausage, and green
trapezoids for peppers.

Body
Learning activity or
sequence of activities. )

Time: 14 mins

Construction (5 mins)
Have the students glue each shape evenly over the pizza, ensuring to make
every shape at least once and gluing over the hexagon. Remind students to
practice neat cutting and gluing, and can refer to the worksheet to know
which colour matches with the shape. Students may glue the ingredients
they do not like on the edge, indicating they would not like it.
Counting (2 mins)
Count each shape and record it on the worksheet in pencil. Have the
students count the total number of shapes they used for their pizzas.
Clean up (1min)
Have students split between their partners to throw away scrap paper and
collect the scissors and glue.

Closure
Time: 3 mins

Have students pair again and compare their pizzas and count each
others shapes and peer-check their work. Ask them to compare the
ingredients on each pizza and calculate the differences.
Demonstrate using two student examples.
Coming back to the group review how to construct a pizza and all of
the shapes used. Students may share their pizzas and by identifying
the amount of one of the shapes.

Notes and Ideas

Could make it a pizza party and wear aprons and draw on curled mustaches with face paint. Could also make
some sort of chefs hat prior to the math activity to add to the party.
