structural forms: the dome

-domes can be seen as revolved arches,

since multiple points forming a circle a
are joined and united and supported at the center point.
-when it comes to forces on a dome, the compressive load
will press down from the top of the dome and along
the sides. the tensile load will push outwards across
the bottom edge of the dome.
-earliest found dome was from an unknown time, but made of mammoth tusks and bones.
-native americans used branches and grass to make domes called wingwams.
-early civilizations in snowy areas and even desert areas built igloos.
-domes started to be featured in modern architecture starting with persia.
