    Model:

    FT-897

    Symptom:

    When volume is turned up, radio resets.

    Cause:

    While reaching for the volume control, static discharge internally shorts pin 59 (AF-VR) of
    Q4012, to ground. Q4012 (CPU) is located on the panel Unit. The volume control CW pin
    connects to +5v and when the volume is turned up, the +5 shorts to ground through the volume
    control and Q4012.

    Cure:

    Replace Q4012 (Part number G1093882). To protect the front CPU from static discharge, add a
    ground lug and wire to the volume control and connect the other end of wire to the chassis.
