BATTLEFIELD OF FAITH
Majority of concepts are from Truth Be Told; Basics in Catholic
Apologetics, by Mark Hart and Joe Cady
Question: Why go to another sinner for Confession if only God can
forgive sins?-Pg. 144-147
In John 20: 21-23, Jesus Christ Himself breathes power into His
Apostlesthe first to serve in the new priesthoodto forgive the sins
of others. Saint Paul further supports that Priests are given the ability
to forgive sins by Gods authority in 2 Corinthians 5: 17-20, through
the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Any sin we commit never hurts only one person or a few people. One
sin committed by a person hurts all of us. The shame of sin, or the fear
of being found in a state of sin, negatively affect our behavior toward
others. Also, because we are all part of the Body of Christ, if one part
is damaged by sin, then all of us are harmed as well.

FAMILY MASS
February 28, 2016
CATHOLIC FAMILY CHALLENGE
In this Lenten season make one successful attempt to partake of the
Sacrament of Reconciliation as a family. One great opportunity comes
in the form of Communal Penance.
Communal Penance occurs at OMOS on a chosen Sunday evening
during Lent, usually at 7:30 pm.
If this cannot be done, then there are plenty of scheduled availabilities
of priests throughout the week for Confession (See your parish
bulletin).

Though we are going to a priest to confess our sins, it is through the

priest that Christ personally forgives our sins. In James 5: 14-16, we
are told that our sins cannot be forgiven by just any other person, but a
specially chosen person. That person is a priest.
In the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession), the priest acts in the
name of Christ. When our sins are absolved by a priest, the priest is
not the one absolving our sins, but Jesus is. This is because the priest is
in a state called persona Christi Capitis; in the person of Christ.
There are problems with thinking that our sins can be forgiven without
Confession. Confessing sins to another person requires the humility of
being vulnerable, which eliminates feelings of guilt after Confession.
Also, Catholic priests are excellent accountability partners who are
trained in counseling and spiritual direction. Having priests to hold us
accountable prevents future sin, due to the embarrassment that comes
with telling an accountability partner our sins. More importantly, all of
this comes with Christs absolutionthe cancellation of sin.

Repent, says the Lord;

the kingdom of heaven is at hand
