Treatments

No treatment has been proven to cure or delay the

progression of AD.

Five drugs currently used to treat cognitive problems.

tacrine (Cognex)-mild to moderate AD
donepezil (Aricept)-advanced AD
galantamine (Razadyne)-mild to moderate AD
rivastigmine (Exelon) -mild to moderate AD

reversible, non-competitive acetylcholinesterase inhibitor

improves cholinergic neurotransmission by delaying the
breakdown of acetylcholine released into the synaptic cleft.

memantine (Namenda)-moderate to severe AD

noncompetitive NMDA receptor antagonist

N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor
blocks the effects of pathologically elevated levels of
glutamate, which can lead to neuronal dysfunction.

Antioxidants (clinical trials)

Studies indicated that the intake of antioxidants is associated with a
lower risk for AD
Studies suggested that people at risk for developing Alzheimer's
disease or being in the early phases of this disease may benefit

Immunotherapy
AN-1792
caused the bodys immune system to actively find and remove
beta amyloid in the brain
Testing was stopped due to the development of autoimmune
encephalitis in 6% of patients

o CAD106
to stimulate amyloid- (A)-specific antibody responses
while avoiding T-cell autoimmune responses
Results: positive antibody response in most patients and
no signs of adverse autoimmune inflammation
