1.Ontologicalposition

Thereexistmultiplerealities.Thereisnooneobjective,universalreality.Theremaybeareality
outthereexternaltohumansocialactors(weakversion),butwehavenodirectaccesstothis.
For interprevists at the strong end of the spectrum, there is no reality outside of our social
constructions(socialconstructionism/constructivism).

There exist multiple truths there is no objective, universal truth, just contrasting (sometimes
competing)definitionsoftruth.Peoplemayholdapparentlyconflictingtruthssimultaneously.

2.Epistemologicalposition

Subjectivisttheoryofknowledge;noobjectiverealityortruth.

Reality/realities are constructed by social actors in social interaction; they are subjective,
multiple,mutable,andcontextdependent.

Researcherandresearchedmutuallyinfluenceand coconstruct thedata;researchfindingsare


thus coconstructions, emergent from the interaction, not waiting to be discovered.

3.Methodologicalposition

Qualitative methodology required in order to come to understand participants lifeworlds from


theirperspective,toavoidimpositionofresearchersmeaninguponher/hisparticipants.

Emergentresearchdesigncanchangeprocessually.

Variety of approaches (e.g. auto/ethnography, participant observation, auto/phenomenography,


visual)andvarietyofmethods(e.g.interviews,focusgroups,documentaryanalysis,photography).

All research is valueladen; values are inherent and inescapable; our values and social
characteristicsaffectthestudyfrominceptiontoconclusion.Reflexivityessential.

The aim of interpretivism and of qualitative research is understanding the lifeworlds and the
meaningsandunderstandingsofourparticipants(neversubjects)incontext.

4.Axiologicalissues(ethics)

Wehaveafundamentaldutyofcaretoourparticipantsbutalsotoourselvesasresearchersand
tootherresearchers.Thisincludesrepresentationalissuesregardingourdata.
