Sorority Women

Give Back

When you think of Greek life at a University

your mind floods with horrible images of
the stereotypes the media portrays it
to be. Thankfully, those stereotypes
are not what its like to be involed in the Greek community.
Each of the 26 recognized
Panhellenic sororities have their
own philanthropies that strive to raise
money for. Sammi Beyer, a junior at the
University of North Florida says, Service helps
you grow as a person and opens your eyes to the
needs of the world. Kappa Delta serves the communit
hrough confidence initiatives, working with the Girl Scouts
and nationally working with Prevent Child Abuse America. Its
amazing the things you can do and the lives you can change with just
little effort. Kappa Deltas national sorority serves the Prevent Child Abuse
America as their national philanthropy since 1981.

According to the most recent total provided by the National

Panhellenic Councils 2013-2014 annual report, sorority women
raised over $5.7 million for philanthropies. These women have
also completed nearly 1 million community service hours as
well.
Kaitlyn Healy describes how her sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta, has given her multiple opportunities for service and helping
her community. Service means giving back to my
community. Theta has helped me help others bu
giving me an abundance of opportunities to
give back to the Jacksonville community whether it be volunteering at the
Nemours Childrens Hospital
by throwing a spring party
for the oncology department or by cleaning the local childrens
YMCA. Theta allows me to
give back to my community selflessly.
Philanthropies are close to the sorority womens heart who serve them. Caitlin
Schwab is a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha
sorority and their philanthropy is Breast Cancer
Awareness and Education. She explains what Zetas
involvment with this philanthropy means to her, Service
means being able to contribte back to something that has affected your life. ZTA helps me volunteer at cancer walks and the
Susan G Komen marathon. Zetas grants me the opportunity to
give back to a cause that has affected my life personally.
