This school year your child will be participating in the literacy program Rooted In Reading. The
program provides a focus on comprehension, study skills, vocabulary, and writing for our middle
school students. These skills are necessary to create lifelong learners. These are the essential
elements for each component of the program:
-Comprehension: students will obtain a variety of active reading strategies, how
to summarize a text and identify the theme of a text
-Study Skills: students will learn note taking strategies and locating essential terms to
use in their notes
-Writing: students will learn to write for a variety of audiences: informative, narrative,
argumentative and using graphic organizers/charts to organize their writing
-Vocabulary: students will learn domain specific terms, multiple meaning words and how
to clarify meanings of new vocabulary

We need your help to continue the key factor of the program, reading, at home. In order to show
your child the importance of reading:
Identify your childs interests and bring books or magazines home to read with your child based
on their interest.
Play games such as Bingo and Scrabble that focus on spelling and word building with your
child.
Explore your childs interest by watching a video or movie about a book your child enjoyed
reading.
Start a book club with your child! Read a book they suggest and discuss the book together.
