The principal previously operated under a centralized power structure where only a few staff members were involved in decision making. This led to little staff empowerment or incentive to learn. The current principal distributes leadership through transparent committees where consensus is built through mutual respect and understanding differing views. Everyone has a voice in decisions, which has empowered staff and encouraged learning and development.

staff I have worked under two different principals in my four years here. The first principal operated under a very centralized power structure. He and only a few members of the staff were involved in the day-to-day operations of the building and were the main decision makers of the building. Staff did not make decisions without consulting the administrator or the school psychologist. There was very little staff empowerment and very little incentive to learn and improve. My current principal operates under a very different structure. He operates several; very transparent committees that help make decisions for the building. We try to build a consensus based on mutual respect and understanding opposing views. Discussions are held, the principal solicits opinions, and steps in when he feels the need to make sure opinions are respected. Everyone is given an opportunity to voice their opinions and give their feedback. This opportunity to be part of the decision making process has allowed staff members to feel empowered and has also encouraged staff to learn and develop as an individual and staff member. There is a sense of togetherness and ease in our building that has not been here in the years I have worked at here.
