The 3rd grade students are working independently on biographies for an upcoming Living Museum presentation in social studies. They are at different stages of writing, from drafting to editing. The biographies include sections on the notable person's introduction, early life, adult life, characteristics, and conclusion. The teacher did not set strict deadlines and is available to answer questions as students work. Students chose various notable historical figures to research, including Clara Barton, Jane Goodall, J.K. Rowling, and the Wright brothers.

Instructional Lesson Classroom: Frederich Grade: 3rd grade Curriculum Area: Social Studies What I notice
Students are working on their
biographies for their Living Museum Presentations. The biographies consist of pages for: their notable persons introduction, early life, adult life, characteristics, and conclusion.
Students are working
independently throughout the room. Some students are at their desks, others are at the back tables, and some are lying on the carpet.
Students are in all different
stages of the writing process. The teacher did not give specific deadlines for the class to meet so it is up to the students to ensure every thing get completed. Some students were finishing up their final drafts and drawing the cover page and others were in the editing process of their pages. During this time Mrs. Frederich is working on getting ready for the Living Museum presentations coming up and also answering students questions and conferencing with students if asked.

I found it so interesting what
notable persons in history the class chose. Some of the students got very creative with who they wanted to research. In the class we had Clara Barton founder of the American Red Cross, primatologist Jane Goodall, J.K. Rowling, Pleasant Rowland founder of American Girl Dolls, Orville Wright, Michael Jordan, Gandhi, and many more.
I wish I were able to be there
when they were in the brainstorming process of finding their person to portray and research.
This project connects writing to
social studies and language arts. Before they began the project, the students had a literacy unit on biographies.
