Lesson Title: Collaborative Mascot Collage

Objectives (I Can):

--contribute to an artwork along with a group of other working artists.

--understand and follow the steps of a process.
--find, select, and use appropriate values and colors to create an image.

Art History: Collage, modernism, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Georges Braque
Art Production: Collage techniques, including cutting, gluing, and matching colors.

Working collaboratively with others.

Vocabulary:

--Collage
--Value
--Color

--Space
--Overlapping
--Collaborative work

--Installation/Permanent Artwork

Lesson Outline:
--Introduce collage and share artists who have worked with the technique (Pablo Picasso, Henri
Matisse, Georges Braque).
--Using a projector, trace the gridded image from step 1 onto the 6" squares. This could also be done
by hand if desired.
--Use colored pencils to "map" out the colors of each square.
--Cut pictures from magazines or calendars in the colors of the image you will collage. Cut paper
pieces no larger than 2" in any direction.
--Glue colors and values onto drawing paper squares using a glue stick. Discuss spacing with students
and overlapping techniques, which help cover a colored area completely and effectively.
--Once a square has been collaged, attach it to the larger foundation. Add transitional pieces to unify
your squares together, or leave them slightly different to highlight the grid technique.
--Seal the work with gel medium or spray acrylic sealant.

Materials/Prep:
--Select image to be created for the collaboration and divide the image into even squares. You'll need
one square for each student/small group.
--Cut white drawing paper (80#) into squares, large enough to fill the space where the work will be
installed (this work was 8' x 8', so 256 squares were cut 6" wide).
--Glue sticks
--Collage materials (magazines, calendars, images, etc.)
--Collage foundation (plywood or cardboard)
--Gel medium or acrylic sealant
