Small Group Reading Lesson

For this small group reading lesson, students are exploring authors purpose and main idea. In a
group comprised of four students, they are taking turns reading a short passage about Komodo
Dragons aloud. However, before continuing students must first label the different features
contained within the paragraph. Students will use the following organization strategy to identify
the main idea and supporting details for each paragraph:

INFO-BOXES
Main Idea:
Supporting Details
1.
2.
3.
Each student will take turns reading and open up the discussion of what they believe the main
idea is and their peers will discuss what the supporting details are. Following this, students will
independently complete four multiple choice questions that are related to the reading. However,
the teacher will go over how to answer the first questions with student. Proceeding this, the
teacher will collect students pencils and openly discuss what they have chosen as their answers
and to expand their reasoning. At the end, the teacher will restate the importance of finding the
main idea and supporting it with details.
