Opposite foot forward of hitting arm

Hold ball stationary in non-hitting
hand level with opposite knee
Hitting arm fully extended and back
Hitting wrist bent backwards and
hand/fingers fully extended
Swing hitting arm toward ball via
north/south swing motion
Contact ball with heel of the hand
Follow thru with hitting arm high and
toward direction of intended target

The Seven (7) Target Behaviors & the Associated Biomechanics

Principles of the Underhand Volleyball Serve
1. Opposite foot forward of hitting arm - "maintains balance and
generates power"
2. Hold ball stationary in non-hitting hand level with opposite knee "movement effectives and magnitude & timing"
3. Hitting arm fully extended and back - "force generation and
absorption"
4. Hitting wrist bent backwards and hand/fingers fully extended
- "movement effectives and force generation & absorption"
5. Swing hitting arm toward ball via north/south swing motion - "torque"
6. Contact ball with heel of the hand - "force generation and absorption"
7. Follow thru with hitting arm high and toward direction of intended
target - "movement effectiveness and torque"
NOTE: The data tables below reflect the target behaviors of the
underhand volleyball serve which each of the participants within the
instructional intervention group each had difficulty demonstrating
correctly during the round itself (or in other words, the range of
target behaviors which were incorrectly demonstrated during either
trial 1, 2 or 3 of the round).
NOTE: The table below IS NOT their individual task analysis scores
for a specific trial but instead is a summary account of the target
behaviors in which the participants had difficulty correctly
demonstrating.
