Chapter 13 to 16
3. What is the main conflict in the novel? Explain it in detail, giving
examples from the book.
The main conflict in the book is the war against drugs that the country
of Mexico is dealing with but it goes deeper than just only the present
conflicts. The author analyses the Mexican culture beginning from the history
of how the drug trafficking started in this country, and goes all through the
secret relationships of power between the government and the Narco world. It
also focuses on the struggle of the younger generations trying to get something
going for them, but the lack of opportunities leads them into the path of the
drug world. In chapter 13 we can see someone who actually went through the
path of the good guys Daniel an ex-member of a gang had the opportunity to
become a marine and that is what lead him into a righteous life, working as a
DEA officer. To quote the author: the DEA needs people like Daniel, who
was born in Tijuana, hung round with a California street gang (Grillo;
p.227).
At the same time the author in the last chapter of the book called
Peace describes how regular Mexicans have hope that someday the country
would overcome this fear and social struggle and can live in the so wanted
peace. The author describes how both in Culiacan and in Ciudad Juarez
different persons use a reference of superman having to intervene and save the
cities from the bad guys.
