Assessment: This is the major assessment for the Speaking and Listening
section of the course. The list below Is outlines how you will be graded.
1. Work you do within your roles -- teacher observation based on leadership,
note-taking, respect for group expectations and artistic interpretations.

2. Individual assessment based on the beginning of the novel (due Monday,
April 11th) (Reading and Viewing)
3. Book Defense: Formal group presentation (starting the week of Monday,
May 16th) (Speaking and Listening)
4. Peer and Self Evaluation (at the end of the novel study) (Speaking and
Listening)
Reading for Understanding: As you read through your novel, you need to
annotate with sticky notes. Possible things to annotate:

Personal connections you can make between the text and your experiences
Words or passages you found confusing
Quotations that stand out because you think they are important/interesting
Questions you have
Predictions you have
Examples of literary devices/figurative language: metaphor, simile,
imagery, symbolism, diction, allusion, juxtaposition, alliteration, etc.
Examples of elements of a novel: setting, plot, organization of the text,
protagonist, antagonist, climax, resolution, character analysis, etc.

Meeting #1: Friday, April 8th

Meet at the beginning of class to set group expectations


Decide on a reading schedule (novel must be read by May 6th) *A copy
must be kept in your group folder
Decide on group roles (leader, note-taker, artist) 'Everyone must
experience each role at least once
Begin reading (second half of class) and complete first impressions
assessment due by Monday, April 11th
