1. Show that = .

2. Prove / from the mathematical statement of 2nd law of thermodynamics (as discussed in the
class).
3. Show that dq is an inexact differential but dq/T is an exact differential.
4. For adiabatic change in ideal gas show that = , where =Cp/Cv.
5. Calculate the values of total entropy changes for cooling of 10 moles of O2 (g) (behaves ideally) from 298
K to O2 (l) at 90.19 K if the process is done (a) reversibly and (b) irreversibly by placing the sample in
liquid hydrogen at 13.96 K. Given vapH = 6.820 kJ mol1 at 90.19 K and Cp = 7/2 R for the gas.
6. The melting point of a compound is 146 C and the enthalpy of fusion is 32 kJ/mol. Molar heat

capacities (at constant pressure) of its liquid and solid forms are 28 J K1 mol1 and 19 J K1
mol1, respectively. If the melting of the compound is carried out at 25 C, calculate entropy of
fusion and enthalpy of fusion of the compound at 25 C.
7. Show that freezing of a mole of supercooled water at 10 C is an irreversible change. Given
enthalpy of fusion = 6004 J/mol. The heat capacities of water and ice are 75.3 J K-1mol-1
and 36.8 J K-1mol-1 respectively.
