Analysing and Evaluating The Reliability

and Relevance of Sources
When choosing sources to include in your inquiry, it is important that you analyse the
credibility, reliability and relevance of the source. Consider the following questions:
Who wrote the article? Are they a trustworthy source? Why / Why not? (Consider their
education, job, affiliation, etc.)
Who published the source? What is the credibility of this publisher?
What is the purpose of this source? What is the motive/intension?
How does the source position the reader / audience?
To whose benefit is it that you believe the information provided? Yours? The authors?
The publishers?
Where is this source published/developed? (What country are you in? Where has the
internet taken you?)

What are the key messages of this source?

Is the source current? Is this the most up-to-date information?
How does the source relate to the task and inquiry question?
Does this source relate to any studies / reports / interviews? Are these current and
credible?
To what extent is the source based on facts? What are the facts?
To what extent is it based on opinions? What are the opinions?
What evidence is there to support the claims / arguments presented?
Is bias evident?
Are there any gaps / silences? Is the complete story given or just
elements/facts?

Refer to the Critical Use of Sources

worksheet for more questions and
guidance.
