Simulations in Education - Presented by Elizabeth Reicher

Emerging Technologies - 03/26/15

What is a simulation?
A simulation is basically hands on experience with real world content that is not accessible in
educational settings due to the learners lack of knowledge and experience in real world
scenarios.
Why Should Simulations be used in Educational Settings?

To integrate higher levels of rigor and relevance in classroom instruction.

Enrich Project Based learning activities.

Promote the use of higher level thinking skills.

Provide learners with useful skills to use in real world applications!

Increase student engagement/Learners become Participants!

Simulations can be easily adapted to provide differentiated instruction.

Simulations are often cross curricular and provide practice for many skills at one time.

They remove danger from real life scenarios so that learners can think through decisions
without fear.

They are cost effective and you get a lot of learning for your buck.

When learners engage in simulations they model behavior to understand the behavior and
can make predictions about the cause and effects of content in real life scenarios.
Examples of ways that Simulations are being used in educational settings

Medical Training

Global Awareness

Military Training

Drivers Training

Safety Engineering

Remediation and Enrichment
