    themaswellastheirfamilies.Someofthesecharacterstransitionedfromahappylife
    withabrightfuture,tonotknowingiftheywouldbeabletoseetheirfamilyandfriends
    everagain.Throughoutthesestories,somepeopleandfamilieswerebroughtcloser
    togetherwhilesomerelationshipsweretornapartbyseparationorfamilyconflicts.

    separationandbroughtclosertogetherwiththeirremainingfamilymembers.Inthe
    beginningofEliesstory,hedescribeshisfatherasratherunsentimental.Herarely
    displayedhisfeelings,notevenwithinhisfamily,andwasmoreinvolvedwiththe
    welfareofothersthanwiththatofhisownkin(4).Elieandhisfathersrelationship
    changessignificantlybecausetheybecomealleachotherhasandarepushedtotheir
    emotionallimitsforcingthemtodisplaytheirfeelingstoeachother.Inthisway,Elieand

    duringtheHolocaust.Vladekswife,Anja,begantotakeatollonhislifewhenshe
    clarifiedherdepressionbyexplaining,ButIdontcare.IJUSTDONTWANTTOLIVE
    (31).EvenbeforetheyweresenttotheAuschwitz,Anjasufferedfromdepression,
    whichaffectedVladekconsideringhowhelovedAnja,evenaftershecommitted
    suicide.VladeklostnearlyallhisfamilyintheHolocaustbysendinghissonaway,his
    parentsbeingtakenaway,andhiswifesufferingfromdepression.Theseevents
    changedyoung,kindVladekintoabitter,grumpyoldman.

    socialstandards,thetwoshouldbeenemies.Brunoandhisfamilyseemtobequite
    happywiththeirlife,untiltheymovenearaconcentrationcampthathisfatherruns.As
    BrunobefriendsShmuelandBrunosmotherlearnsmoreabouttheterriblethingsher
    husbandisdoing,thefamilybeginstotearapart.YoungBrunoisconfusedbythe
    concentrationcampandbeginstotrusthisfatherlessandtrustShmuelmore.Thisis
    whenBrunobeginstochangefromenemytoallybyformingafriendshipwithShmuel.
    AsBruno'sandShmuelsfriendshipfurthers,Shmuelbeginstohavesomehopethathe
    andhisfathermightsurvivebecauseofBrunoshelp.Ultimately,thefriendshipbetween
    themendswithBrunoandShmueldeadinthegaschamber.Thisstoryisanexample
    ofchangingonestrustintheirfamilytoasupposedenemy.
    Thesetragicstoriesaregreatexamplesofhowquicklyrelationshipsandfamilies
    couldchangethroughoutthedurationHolocaust.Whilecharactersbuiltfriendshipsand
    closebonds,otherrelationshipsweresimultaneouslytornapart,drasticallychanging
    thoseinvolvedinsuchatraumaticevent.Asshownthroughbooksandfilm,the
    Holocaustwastoohorrifyingandbigtonotaffectapersondirectlyinvolved.Ultimately,
    thethemeofchangewasomnipresentinthelivesofallpeopleinvolvedwiththe
    Holocaust.
