I. Rise to Power
Cronus’ father was Uranus, ancient god of the sky and
the heavens.
Uranus had many children, the titans, with Gaia
(earth), his wife and mother.
Fearing their power, he
sent them to tartarus
(the abyss), deep within
Gaia . Here the titans
were trapped for many

years.
I. Rise to Power
Gaia’s children pained her while trapped within.
She constructed a powerful scythe and begged her
children to use it to kill Uranus.
Only one of them,
Cronus, could do it.
He took the scythe and
killed Uranus with it,
then took Uranus’s
place as lord of the
universe. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/d7/The_Mutiliation_of_Uranus_by_Saturn.jpg/800px-The_Mutiliation_of_Uranus_by_Saturn.jpg
II. Father of the gods
Cronus, now the ruler of the universe, married his
sister, Rhea (mother of the gods).
Together, they had six
powerful children named
Hades, Demeter, Poseidon,
Hestia, Hera, and Zeus.
These children were to
become more powerful than
even the titans themselves,
so Cronus tried to stop them.
II. Father of the gods
To prevent his children from overthrowing him,
each time one was born he devoured it.
Hating to see her babies eaten, Rhea had her last
child, Zeus, in private.
When he asked for the baby godling,
Rhea gave Cronus a rock wrapped in
blanket instead.
The real Zeus matured, then cut open
Cronus’ stomach, saving the other
gods. They waged war on the titans
and won when Zeus cut Cronus apart
