Example on Dc-dc converters and Dc-Ac converters
1) Consider an emergency 2.5kVA/120V/60Hz power supply fed by a 48V battery bank. It is
composed of a battery bank, a PWM dc-dc boost converter, a dc bus with a capacitor filter, a
PWM dc-ac single-phase converter, a step-up transformer and an output LC filter. The dc-ac
converter (inverter) is controlled with SPWM (10 KHz) and fixed modulating factor (ma = 1).
The duty-cycle of the dc-dc converter varies to compensate for the voltage decrease in the
battery, as it discharges with time. The dc bus is to be regulated at 100 V. A) Calculate the
expected range of D, for the dc-dc converter, assuming that the system will shut down when the
battery voltage drops to 80% of its rated value to prevent deep discharge. B) Considering the
input current of the dc-ac converter to be pure dc, calculate the dc bus capacitor filter so that
the ripple is limited to 10% of the dc voltage. C) Calculate the required turns ratio of the
transformer (ideal). D) Calculate the resonant frequency of the output LC filter so that the
magnitude of the dominant harmonic across the load is limited to 10% of the fundamental
component. Consider that the system operates with rated power.

Proposed problem (Final 2004)

1) Consider a 1.5kVA/220V/60Hz single-phase emergency power supply fed by a 48V battery bank.
It is composed of a battery bank, a PWM step-up (boost) dc-dc converter switching at 20 kHz, a
PWM dc-ac converter, a transformer and an output LC filter. A) Choose the rated value for the
regulated dc bus (between the dc-dc and the dc-ac converters) assuming that Dmax is limited to 0.7
and that the system shuts down when the battery voltage falls below 80% of its rated value. B) The
dc-ac converter is controlled with voltage cancellation and a constant overlap angle (). Choose a
suitable value for the overlap angle and justify your choice. C) Calculate the required turns ratio of
the transformer (ideal). D) Calculate the resonant frequency of the LC filter so that the magnitude
of the dominant harmonic is limited to 10% of the fundamental component.
