Tea Investigation

Problem: If you put sugar cubes in tea will the mass increase,
decrease, or stay the same?
Materials:
Tea bag
Coffee Mug
Sugar Cubes (2)
Spoon (For Mixing)
Triple Beam Balance
Hot Water
Procedure:
1. Put hot water into coffee mug
2. Place tea bag into the coffee mug with hot water
3. Let it settle in for 1 minute
4. Clean off the Triple Beam Balance
5. Set everything to 0 Grams
6. Place the coffee mug with tea onto the Triple Beam
Balance
7. Start with the heaviest weight (100 grams) if it is still
above the white line continue
8. If it is under the white line move the weight a notch
back to when it was over the white line
9. Repeat steps 4 and 5 with the 10 gram weight
10.
Move on to the 1 gram weight
11.
Lightly tap until the white line is completely in line
with the other white line

Record the Data

Remove the coffee mug from the Triple Beam
Balance
14.
Reset all the weights back to 0
15.
Put the 2 sugar cubes into the tea
16.
Mix well with the spoon

Put the coffee mug on the Triple Beam Balance
18.
Repeat steps 7, 8, and 9
19.
Record the mass of the coffee mug with sugar
20. Record the final answer
