Aeolus

Overview
• Aeolus was god of the winds in Greek mythology.
• He lived on a floating island near Sicily.
• The island was called the Aeolian Island which was
named after Aeolus.
• When the gods told him to, Aeolus released the winds
and created devastating storms.
• A lot of people considered the winds to be horse shaped
spirits.
• Aeolus was then named Hippotades, meaning “reiner of
the horses.”
Overview
• Aeolus kept the winds locked inside a cave in
his floating island of Aeolia.
• Aeolus plays a role in the Aeneid.
• The Aeneid begins with the Trojan fleet in the
eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea,
heading towards Italy.
• Juno asks Aeolus and asks him to release
powerful winds to produce a huge storm.
Overview
• In return, Juno promises Aeolus that he will get
Deiopea, the most beautiful sea nymph as a wife.
• Aeolus was the son of Helen of Troy.
• Aeolus agrees and the storm devastates the
fleet.
• Aeolus was the king of four winds- Boreas- North
Wind; Eurus- East Wind; Notus- South Wind;
Zephyrus- West Wind
