Almost seven years ago, on a cold winter,s
morning, I
was in my office at 10 Downing street overlooking
the beautiful
architecture of central London covered in pristine
white snow
all the while wondering why. the then British prime
Minister:

advisor and despite
the fact that no two days were ever the shme

enjoying my role tremendously. I tooked again

that was
my screensaver' to thank Him once again
for one of the many
opportunities in life that He seems to have purposefully
created
for me' ln walked Tony, asking what I was
doing in here when
we were running late! I picked up my coat,
bag and files and
just as I was about to touch the screen
photo of Swami,s
Fadhugai, like I always do atleast hundred
times aday, Tony
reached out and touched the same photo
in reverence. I forgot
about my daily routine and stood transfixed,

turned around and said, "Was that wrong?
I reckoned

looked back at
the photo of my Swami the same beautiful
face that I loved so
much with the mystical eyes that always felt
like He was
looking at me anywhere I was in the room,
the same half smile.
But this time I felt He was telling me

Government needed to win this vote to continue with stability.
Experts had predicted that the voting will be tied. The debate
and the speeches took place. Then the voting. And the
Government won, by a narrow margin. But victory was still a
vlctory. As the Prime Ministerr walked towards me with a big
smile and arms outstretched, and I congratulated h.im, he

leaned down and whispered in my eaL "Yet again, I salute your

faith in your Guru. This is one more example of that."

Over the years since, Swa mi has ensured that he

became very well known to the cream of world politics,
including three British Prime Ministers, thiee US Presidents
and almost every leader who attended the G8 and G20
nations, simply because I always seem to say something
about Swami at some point during these gatherings! Of
course none of it was me. lt was Him, using me as a mere
tool and having fun at my expense. Swamf of course hasn't
had an easy ride in all this considering He has had to get
me out of sticky situations and haul me out of dangerous

Arriving in New York

to address the UN general

assembly on yet another contentious issue, I realised that after

all the prepping and briefing and numerous drafts of my
speech, I had left the actual speech behind in the ofice. I had
fifteen minutes left before I addressed everyone. lt was partly
my fault. I had timed my arrival in such a way that I would not
be subject to the intense opposing lobbying that we expected
certain countries to push for. I went into the restroom, ofl the
pretense of freshening up (the restroom rb where t qlsuatty run
to, if my inner 'batteries' ,?ee d recharging. YotJ can imagine the
counfless number of times Gurunathar was prayed to in
resfrooms across fhe world). Qurunathar rnust be thinking this

to New York. I locked myself in a cubicle, closed my eyes and

just spoke to Gurunathar, within my heafl which is how all my
conversations with Him happen, pretty much every second of
every day. I asked forgiveness for being a complete idiot and
forgetting my speech, explained I had no time now to get a
copy of it (as if Gurunathiar wouldn't know that already. But I
found it comforting within me to confess all to Him) and.begged
Him to be my voice when I spoke. Within minutes, I distinctly
heard a voice within me "Swumi is alwuys within you. Why
this doubt? Just be my spokespersotn". I went in to give my
speech, completely calm and collected. All I remember after
that was opening my mouth to speak when my turn came.
Honestly, the next thing I remember was the standing ovation.
What I said in betweeh, the points I made, the policies I
covered - I didn't remember a thing! One of my team members

came up to me and said, "All the briefing and prepping in the

people. But the person inside me is not. He is a natural, in

ln my personal life, every step of the way, whether big

or small , Gurunathar and Guruii have always made the
decision for me and guided me. When my father had difficulty
deciding whether to send me in the school bus (since all my
friends took the bus I wanted to as wet| instead of by car, it was
Guruji he saw in a dream going to school with children
wearing the same school uniform as mine, in the same school
bus. When again my parents weren't sure about sending their
only daughter to London to study, when we visited,.the Amman
temple in the street behind where we used to live in Chennai
(like t had done every evening after schoo I for years), a short
round woman with an orange saree literally walked out of the
garba graha. I thought I was hallucinating. But when we went

ku poittu vaa ma"! Why would she know aOout my parent,s

dilemma or me going to London? When we turned around she

had disappeared. On the flight to London at sixteen years of
age, I didn't eat anything and spent most of the journey crying
and then fell asleep. A hand shook me awake genly. A small
round man with saffron robes. He smiled and asked in clear
English "Why ure you upset child? You don't like travelling
alone? Yoar eternul futher und mother will alwuys be with

yott. Now eut something please" and then gave me his

cheese sandwich. For ffi, it felt like none other than
Gurunathar. Like that I feel blessed to have had countless
experiences over the years including finding * tl";k
cawing outside my hospital room, window, irrespective

whichever hospital in London I went to, throughout the time

of
my deliveries, for each of my five children. The crow will only fly
away once the baby is born and starts crying. Usually it is very
difficult to find a crow in London even when you entice it with

food, during fasting days etc. Then why was one crow

travelling the distance to various hospitals exacly when I was

having a baby, just to caw outside my hospital room windo w?

Who else but my Gurunathar could have staged such

performancs, to give me the confidence to give birth.
All my
labours incidentally, were easy, short and required no

painkillers.

The first line of Guruii (HH Swami Haridhos Giri)

words of experience, when translated into English, **un,
something like this: "l know nothing but stiJt my Gurunathar
(Sathguru Gnanananda Giri) showers His glorious
blessings upon rne. That denofes Hfs boundless love for
me-" My entire life and its story so far and I have no doubt for
the rest of my existenceo is a testimony to those words. For a

Chennai to go against all the odds to not only study and setle
in the United Kingdom, but to go on to become a chief policy
advisor to the British Prime Minister and rub shoulders with the

world's nrost powerful personalities of the elite circle of world

politics on a day to day basis and to then be honoured.withThe
highest civilian honour in lndia is nothing short of a total
miracle. ln thirty four years, Swami has taught me to go
hungry for days and dine with the Queen; to teach a child in
the slums of Chennai to read and write and to advise both the
British Prime Minister and US President on all kind of matters;
to shop in charity shops for second hand'clothes and receive
phone calls frorn top designers asking me to wear their
clothes; to huddle under the bed in horror with Swamf's statue
and His namavali as my only protection and comfort when

tried to break into the rented flat I shared
with other students in college (none of the other sfudenfs were
there as it was a bank holiday weekend and they had gone to
visit relatives. The phone tine had also been cut! The fact that
neither the door nor the g/ass windows broke open despite ts

hours is another story for another time to demonstiafe Suramf's
infinite protection towards fhose who betieve) and then to have
the top security men of the world guarding me; and to wait at
the tender age of sixteen at the mercy of some stranger as well
as the British immigration officials at the Home office to hear if I
have received an extension for my visa and just six years later
have the authority to instruct the Home Office on behalf of the
Home Secretary! These are but some of the very contrasting
situations Swami has placed me in, not because He had
nothing better to do I am sure but because'He had infinite
kindness to actually take me under his wing and to nullify my
ego. I learnt quite early on that nothing happens without a
reason and the reason will always come from Gurunathar. So if
He wills it, it will happen nevertheless of other negative factors.

taught me pretty quickly that praises and putdowns, SUCCESSES
and failures, the good and the bad, everything should be
accepted equally without bias for one over the other.

This Bharat Ratna is to ffi, more than anything else,

an honour because it is from my mother country which will
always be a part of the person I am, and proudly so. Beyond
that of course, the actual award is really Swami's, He
orchestrated my path to it', He organised the circumstances for
it and He even put me in a situation where I couldn't refuse it
for a third time (having refused it the first two times for various
reasons including the fact that t fett I wasn't old enoughl).
Swami soon taught me that the award was not for me but for
His performance through me and therefore how dare l, a mere
tool of his choice, decide to refuse something that He was
giving? Hence on 15th March, on a deliciously cool Friday
morning, I ended up at the President's official residence in
Delhi, with most of the lndian political elite in tow including my
own and the US ambassadors, to receive this coveted award"
An hour later Swamiii (HH Swami Niranjanananda Giri) was
arriving in Delhi for the onward trip to Koteeswar and I have to
be honest, my entire attention was focussed on making sure I
was there at the airport to receive him and my sense of
excitement was because I was going to see Guruji's Koteeswar
for the first time. The Bharat Ratna award came down in my list
of priorities after these twol What I didn't expect two days later
though, was to receive it again from Swamiji's hands, at
Koteeswar itself. That was both the proudest and most
embarrassing moments of my

life.

Everything I am, every breath I take, everything I

possess, it is all a testimony to Gurunathar and Guruji's

Yogi Ramsuratkumar, following the traditions set by

the ancient Saints of lndia, exemplifies in his way of life and
teachings, certain essential truths of the Hindu approach to
religion and philosophy.
Learning and Faith

Profound knowledge of the Scriptural texts, is not an

essential requisite for a seeker of spiritual progress or
achievement. The Gita has repeatedly mentioned this.
"To the Brahmana who has known the Self, all the
Vedas are of as much use as a reservoir is when there is
flood every where" (Gita ll.V.46)

'By faith and devotion he knows Me in reality, what

and who I am; then having known Me in reality, he forthwith

Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsd, through he had no

tongue in the early stage, but progressively in the

gradually leads to conbentration of the mind

Rama's Name three times equals the recital of the thousand

names of Lord Vishnu. Yogi Ramsuratkumar teaches the

great efficacy of the name of Sri Rama for constant Japa

and meditation. This is in the direct tradition set dow.n by a
long lineage of Hindu Saints Tulsidas, Kabir, Samartha
Ramadas of Maharashtra, the Guru of Sivaji, Ramadas of

Since the truth is noi

(prana). So, when he knows that mind is just
an instrument, he
meditates on breath. The seeker concentrates on breathing,

and discovers that prana or the life-force (not

merely
breathing) is of course not the"Truth, but it leads him
towards
something beyond- the intellect (buddh1. Now he thinks
he
knows something. This is conceptualization. The teacher
removes that. The final obstacle is 'l'- consciousness
(ahamskare)' The seeker understands that the Truth
is beyond
l', knowing, and unknowing- ifs knowledge itself. This
leads to
supreme knowledge, says the Upanishad. This is the
scheme.

There are five great mantr?s, similar to the Buddhist

kayanupassana, beginning with speech and ending;"

life- breath (the mantra on the mind suggesfed after

Next, in the second chapteri something similar to

vedananupassana or the contemplation on feeling
is given.
The samkalpa- vikalpatmika manas are not the Truth.
So the
rndecisive mind (manas) leads the seeker to the
decisive
factor, the intellect (buddhi), and this has to be transcended
too' Then comes something similiar to cittanupassana the
faculty of memory has to be transcended. Next the
ego or ,1,
needs to be conquered. in order to break the concept
that the
mind (antahkarana) is the self, the teacher tells the disciple:

mind.
The Truth has still to be deliberated upon by you.
That is, the feeling that 'l know', the conceptualization,
is to be given up. The meditation continues now. The

'l don't
think I know Brahman well. Not
that I don't know, but I know and dont know
as well., Then
comes something equal to dharmanupassana,
meditation on
the 'thing in itself'. The 'l' (ahamkara) is still
there. This final
obstacte too should be transcended

The final meditation (2.3) says: lt is known

to him to
whom it is unknown; he does not know to
it is known. lt is
unknown to those who know well, and known
to those who do
not know
Th is m ed itatio n is m eant to re
m ove all
conceptu alization. Such concepts are
what make us
'individuals', and make us hold on to ourlittle
selves. lt is these
concepts, again, that make us suffer. So,
after showing that we
are not the body or the mind, the Upanishad
removes the
obstacle of ego also. Through the meditation
on this mantra,
the disciple understands that the Self is something
beyond
knowing and unknowing. He understands
that behind every
state of his beiflg, behind each state of consciousness,
it was
the Atman alone that was there, and nothing
else. That is
knowledge' The aspirant has become the
Truth itself; he iu,
attained immortality. tn the next mantr a (2.4),
he declares:
The Self is known when it is known as the
Self of each
state of consciousness, because thereby
one gets immortality.
So just by concentrating on the question
of what is the

source of speech or hearing or sight, the

aspirant has become
the knower. All his suffering and weakness
are gone.
So he

Through the Self-alone one acquires strength,.through

knowledge alone one attains

immortality.

Having shown the goal and the way, the great Kina
Upanisad (2.5) declares that the Self has to be realized here
and now; othenrvise, other's immense loss we shall remain for
ever bound to falsehood and ignorance:

lf one has realized here, then there is truth; if he has

not realized here, then there is great destruction. The wise
ones, having realized Brahman in all beings, and having
turned away from the world, have become immortal.'
The fundamental aim of meditation is to. make us free.
As the Upanishads declare time and again, 'Thrati sokam
atmavi, The knower of the Self alone overcomes sorrow.' Let's
follow the ancient path and become free.
