1st

Simple shape portraits. That


would be drawn with pencils,
then traced with sharpies,
and colored with crayons.
Advancing a little more with
defined facial shape features
such as the mouth and nose.

2nd

More realistic portraits. They


would be drawn with pencils,
then traced with sharpies,
and colored with crayons.
Symmetry, placement on the
face, and more defined facial
shape features such as the
lips, nose, and ears.

3rd

Day 1:
They will draw more realistic
portraits. Symmetry,
placement on the face, and
more defined facial shape
features such as the lips,
nose, hair, and ears will be
explained and drawn. They
would be drawn with pencils,
then traced with sharpies,
and colored with crayons.The
students will draw, outline,
and start to color their
portraits with a thick coat of
crayon to act as a wax resist.
Day 2:
The students will finish
coloring their portrait to
resemble the clothing they
are wearing, along with the
features they may have like
color of hair, eyes, and
clothes.

Day 3:
The students will be finished
coloring their portraits. Then
we would discuss the
techniques of watercolor and
how to use a paintbrush.
They would then paint the
background of their portraits
in any way they wanted.
4th

Day 1:
The students will be creating
Picasso portraits. I will show
images from Picassos work,
talk about cubism and what
the artists wanted to
communicate, talk about
shapes and breaking the
rules of portraits, and talk
about organic and geometric
shapes. They will first draw
their portraits in pencil and
outline them with a sharpie.
Day 2:
The students will finish
tracing their portraits if they
have not already, and then
they will start to color their
portraits with oil pastels.
Day3:
The students will finish
coloring their portraits with oil
pastels. Then I will hang them
in the hallway.

5th

Day1:
The students will be doing
completely realistic portraits. I
will show pictures of various
portraits from history to infer
similarities and differences. I
will also hand out mirrors to
draw while observing
themselves. I will talk about
symmetry, actual facial
feature shapes, discuss 5

eyes wide, and talk about


shading and give examples.
The students will complete
their own value scale on the
back of their paper before
drawing their face. I will walk
them through the steps of
completing the drawing of
their facial features.
Day 2:
The students will finish
drawing the feature of their
face and they will include hair
and clothing.
Day 3:
The students will start to
shade their faces. I will
reiterate the process of
shading, and how shading
can vary depending on the
light source in the room.
Day 4:
The students will finish
shading their portraits, and I
will hang them in the hallway.
