Dune Summary
In Frank Herberts book Dune, he illustrates the struggles that the House of Atreides faces
when they are ordered to take rule over the planet Dune. In the beginning of the story, Duke
Leto and the House of Atreides are forced to move to Arrakis so that Duke Leto can take up his
new role of governor. The previous governor house, the Harkonnens, had hatched a plan with
the Emperor to dispose of the Atreides House because they had grown very strong and the
Dukes troops were trained so well that they threatened to be better than the Sardaukar (the
Emperors unbeatable troops). The Harkonnens invaded Duke Letos house/base with the help
of Dr. Yueh. The Dukes concubine Jessica and their son Paul managed to escape, but Duke
Leto, Thufir Hawat (the Dukes mentat), and Gurney Halleck were captured. While Baron
Vladimir Harkonnen interrogated Duke Leto, the Duke managed break his fake tooth that
contained a pill filled with a poisonous gas killing Duke Leto and the Barons mentat and guard
captain. Meanwhile Jessica and Paul had escaped to the deep desert where they met some
freemen from the sietch of Stilgar. Jessica and Paul spent two years at the sietch preparing for
the day that they would attack the Harkonnens and the Emperor. While in the sietch, Paul
married a woman named Chani and had a son named Leto II and became the Kwisatz Haderach.
During that time Jessica became the Reverend Mother of the sietch. The freemen then attacked
the Emperor and the Harkonnens and an agreement was made between Paul and the Emperor
that made Stilgar the new governor of Arrakis and Paul the new emperor.
