TheISearchresumeassignmentwassupposedtohelpuspossiblyfigureout
whatexactlywewantasacareeraftercollege,butnoneofthecareersIlookedat
soundedinterestingtome.Forthisproject,Idecidedtoinvestigateacareerinthe
moviebusiness.Ithoughtthatbeinganexecutiveatamoviecompany(effectivelya
producer)soundedfunandinteresting,andeventhoughImostlikelywontgointothis
lineofwork,itwasquiteanexperiencelearningaboutthebusiness.
WhileIwasworkingonthisproject,Igotintouchwithoneofthemanyexecutive
VicePresidentsatFoxSearchlightandwasabletoaskherafewquestionsabouthow
shehadcomeintothatlineofwork.IwasverysurprisedtofindthatElizabethSayre
hadnotattendedaLiberalArtscollege,andhadnotreceivedanydegreeinfilmmaking.
Instead,shehadobtainedasimplegeneraleducation,andthenusedhertimetoobtain
workexperienceandapprenticetoadirector.Shefirstworkedasaresearcherfor
ColumbiaPictures,andthenwasapprenticedtoadirectornamedPaulMazursky.
AfterlearningasmuchasshecouldfromMazurskyandmakingasmanyconnections
aspossible,Ms.SayrewasofferedajobatDisneyasanexecutiveproducerbya
friend.Afterworkingthereforatime,shetriedtofindworkatHBO,butcouldntget
anyonetorespondtoher.Helpcameoncemoreintheformofaconnectionthrougha
friendandshehadsecuredyetanotherjob.Intheend,Ms.Sayremovedonceagainto
amoviecompanybeingheadedbyyetanotherfriend,leavingoneclearconnection
betweenallofhersuccesses.Sheinformedmethatexperienceandforgedconnections
carrymoreweightthananydegree.Personalconnectionisthekeyinthislineofwork.

IbasedmostofmyresearchoffoftheinformationIwasgiveninmyinterview.
Formyresume,ImodeledacareerpathoffofMs.Sayresownexperiences,using
someofthesameplacesofworkandsuch.TheinformationIfoundactuallyinterested
me.Imaynothaveacareeratallsimilartothisone,butIknowthatthisisapossibility
now,foritisaninterestingjobandIcanseemyselfenjoyingit.
Idefinitelyhavedifferentplansforcollege,IdoubtthatIwouldgotoaLiberal
Artscollege,butaccordingtoMs.Sayre,nospecialdegreeisrequiredtomakeitinthis
business.Thebesttraitthatyoucanhopetohaveinanycareerislikeability.This
projectalsohelpedmerealizethataneducationcangetyouinthedoorofajobora
business,butyoucanonlyadvanceintheworkplaceandinlifeifyoucanestablish
connectionswithyourpeers.Intheend,thatisthelifelessonthatIhavetakenaway
fromthisproject,andwillmostlikelyconsiderinmanyfuturesituations.
