British Period (17571947 CE)

The British gained control over India after defeating


the Mughal empire; they decided to let the Indians to
practice their religion and culture without obstruction.
Christian missionaries later came to India, alongside
scholars who sought to westernize the population. A
series of reformers arose in this time period and
strove to rid Hinduism of its superstitions. Gandhi
furthered these ideas through his teachings and
actions, as he helped negotiate Indias independence.
He strongly believed in ahimsa (non-violence) and
other Hindu teachings. The term Hindutva was used
during this time to describe the force that could unite
all Hindus.
