The curriculum map I used is from Sunset Elementary in the
Washington School District. These lessons were created for the 5th
grade class that I student teach in. The homeroom class has 25
students that stay for reading then they switch and my mentor teaches
the entire 5th grade students math.

Sleep

(5.W.2) Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a

topic and convey ideas and information clearly.
First the teacher will hand out a copy of the sleep infograph
to each student. The first paragraph they will read aloud as a
class. We will discuss what the paragraph talked about and why it
is important to know. Then they will have 3 minutes to read the
rest of the infograph on their own in silence. Ask them why it is
important to sleep. Ask how many hours of sleep do they get and
is it enough according to the chart? What 3 things did they learn
about sleeping that they did not already know? What did they
find interesting?
Have them talk about these questions as a group. In order
to make sure every one gets a chance to talk start with one
student in each group and set a timer for 30 seconds. That way

each student in the group gets 30 seconds to answer the

questions to the group and discuss what they learned. Once they
have finished their discussions have one person from each group
of desks share what they talked about.
Then have each student get out a piece of lined paper so
they can write their responses down. They will need to write 5
sentences answering the questions asked using information
directly from the infograph. Each sentence needs to be a
complete sentence with proper formatting. When they finish their
paragraph they turn it into the reading bin then read a book
quietly while they wait.
Sustainability Conserving Energy
(5.SL.1) Engage effectively in a range of collaborative
discussions (oneonone, in groups, and teacherled) with
diverse partners on grade 5 topics and texts, building on
others ideas and expressing their own clearly.
The mini lesson this day will start with a discussion on what the
students already know about conserving energy. Then they will
watch a BrainPop video that they will need to take notes on. After
the video the students will talk in their groups about what notes

they took down during the video. After they have a short
discussion the teacher will call on students to share what their
group discussed.
Then the teacher will hang a poster on the wall with the
title: Conserving Energy. The students one group at a time will
each come up and add one thing they learned from the video.
Each student needs to have his or her own sentence on the
poster. Then the teacher will circle the one that appears the most
and ask students why that was interesting to them.
Healthy Eating
The class will start with a short discussion on what type of
foods do they eat on a regular basis. The teacher will start a chart
on the board to keep track of food items said. Then the reading
passage, The Truth about Weight, will be passed out to the
students. Students will quickly pair up and find a place in the
room to sit to read the passage. They will have to read the whole
passage with their partner then answer the follow up questions
together.
When they are done they will turn in their packets. While
they wait for others to finish they will write a short summary of

what they took away from the article on a sticky note then post in
on the white board. Once all the students are done with the
reading and questions the teacher will debrief about the article
by reading some of the notes students posted.
