From this I learned what exactly El Paso Electric Company did to build the star on
the Franklin Mountains. I also learned that the star was built in 1940 and was built
around World War II. This was useful because it helped me find out the information
for my Childrens Book and helped me get the exact dates on where and when they
built it.
Episd, Arturo Arriaga, Mr. "The Star On The Mountain." Interview. Episd. Episd. El Paso, Texas,
Spring 2017. Radio.
Interview
From this I learned what exactly El Paso Electric Company did to build the star on
the Franklin Mountains. I also learned that the star was built in 1940 and was built
around World War II and that many people didn't really think that it was a good
idea This was useful because it helped me find out the information for my
Childrens Book and helped me get the exact dates on where and when they built it.

From this I learned about how people think of the Franklin Mountains and how
they would treat it when they were there. Also 107 out of 195 people rated the
Franklin State Park excellent and 66 out of 196 rated the park very good. I also
learned that most of the people who commented loved the hike and would do it
again if they came back to the park. This was useful because the hike includes
looking at the star on the mountain and if they saw it they would give it better
ratings.
Christmas in the American Southwest. Chicago: World Book, 1996. Print.
From this I learned thatin 1993, through a joint project of the Greater El Paso
Chamber of Commerce and El Paso Electric Company. Also the star became a
nightly feature in El Paso's skyline. The project now lets El Pasoans sponsor the
star to be lighted in a loved one's honor or for special occasions. I also learned that
about $45,000 was spent to renovate the star in 2007. The upgraded consisted of
installing new wiring and light fixtures that can protect the bulbs from the
weather, installation of screw-in, fluorescent white lights that will replace the lessreliable, yellowish incandescent bulbs, and installation of a radio-frequency remote
system to allow the Star on the Mountain to be turned on or off by computer or cell
phone rather than requiring a crew to physically go up the Franklins.

Reichel, Fredric. "Bikers, Beware." Los Angeles Magazine 1 May 2012. Print.
From this I learned about how the bikers in El Paso have gotten flat tires from the
rocks and the stickers from the Franklin Mountains. I also learned that most of
their flat tires have been from the light bulbs from the star on the Franklin
Mountains. This was useful because it talks about how they have to beware and they
are only letting a couple of people take bike rides because they have to beware and
stop the cause of losing light bulbs.

"El Paso, Texas: World's Largest Man-Made Illuminated Star." El Paso, TX. Web. 01 Mar. 2016.
http://www.roadsideamerica.com/tip/7305
From this I learned about the World's Largest Man-Made Illuminated Star. Also
how El Paso Electric Company had to rebuild the star because of a big winds storm
near the mountains. I also learned that the first star was smaller and the star is now
459 feet tall, 278 feet wide, using 459 light bulbs. It is perched on the side of the
Franklin Mountains, which slice right through the middle of this international
border community. It can be seen for 100 miles from the air and 30 miles from the
highways leading into town from the east. This is useful because it helps raise
awareness to other people.
"A STUDENT OF THE GAME HARD WORK PAYS OFF FOR ROCKY MOUNTAIN STAR
FRANKLIN RYK."Rocky Mountain News (Denver, CO). 18 Mar. 2002. Print.
From this I learned about how a straight A+ student paid for the star to be lit on the
Franklin Mountains. I also learned that he was working hard and had 3 jobs to pay
for the star to light up on his mothers birthday. This is useful because it shows how
expensive it is to light up the star back then because not they light it up every night.
"Light the Star!" Light the Star!Web. 01 Mar. 2016.
http://www.elpaso.org/about-el-paso/light-the-star/

learned that in November 2010, the star turned orange for a week to "launch the
Tim Floyd era in UTEP basketball." Also in April 2012, the star was turned blue in
recognition of Autism Awareness Month. Many El Pasoans remember the Star on
the Mountain being lighted only during the holiday season as opposed to all year, as
it is now. The star was first lighted Nov. 29, 1940. This is useful because it helps
bring awareness and a cause to El Paso.

of 459 feet keep the star where it is. Starting at the top of the mountain top, and
running down to a point of about 200 feet above Scenic Drive. Also The Star can be
seen from the east for 100 miles from the air and about 30 miles from the ground. I
also learned that many pilots are known for using the Star when navigating through
the air. This was useful because it showshow the lights were placed and what the El
Paso Electric Company were thinking when they built the star.

From this I learned about how Paul Deegan offers advice on how to help change the
Star on the Franklin Mountains. I also learned that the star sits at a 30 degree angle
and can be perfectly viewed from Alameda Avenue. Also that the star was lit for 444
days in recognition of the American hostages who were held in Iran. This was useful
because it showed me that Paul Deegan actually does care about El Paso and their
star.
