byJohnSteinbeck,Steinbeckconnectsthelivesoffarmingfamilyon
theirjourneytoCaliforniaduringthegreatdepressionandthemanymisfortunestheyencounter.
Thedustbowlinthe1930scausedagreatdealofmisfortuneformanyfarmers,nottomention
thegrowingindustrializationoffarming.Duetothismanysmallerfarmslosttheirlandtobanks,
afterborrowingmoneyfromthem,leavingthemhomelessandontheroadtoCaliforniainsearch
forwork.Thesefamiliesstruggledandperseveredthroughthehardesttimes,butthrough
struggleandoppressionunitybetweenthemwouldonlygrow.
OneoftheseveralfactorsleadingtothemigrationfromMidweststatestoCaliforniawas
oppression.WhenTomJoadfinallyreturnedtohishometownfromjailhesawtheresult,mostof
histowninruinsandvacant.FiredupinarantwithhispreviousneighborMuley,Tominfuriated
saysCausewhatdtheytakewhentheytractoredthefolksoffthelan?Whatdtheygetsotheir
marginaprofitwassafe?TheygotPadyinonthegroun,anJoeyellinhisfirstbreath...

threedollarsaday.Anearbytenantastonishedattheboyworkingagainsthisownpeople,
questionedDavisButforyourthreedollarsadayfifteenortwentyfamiliescanteatatall.
Nearlyahundredpeoplehavetogooutandwanderontheroadsforyourthreedollarsaday
(50).Oppressioncanchangepeopleandastimesgotrougherpeoplehadonlyonethingontheir
mindandthatwasprovidingfortheirfamilies,nomatterwhatthetask.
Oppressionofthepeoplethenleadtotheirstruggletoprovidefortheirfamilies.When
theJoadsreachedCaliforniaitwasfarfromwhattheyhadimagined,Theywerehungry,and
theywerefierce.Andtheyhadhopedtofindahome,andtheyfoundonlyhatred(318).
TravelerstoCaliforniareceivednowelcomingfortheywereseenasarisktothelocalsjobs.But
thiswasabenefitforthefarmsinthearea,takingadvantageofthedesperatepeopleinneedof
work.TheJoadsfindthemselveslookingforworkatacottonfarm,discussingpaytheyaretold
Costyaadollar,thebag.Takeitoutoyourfirsthunderdandfifty.Eightycentsahunderdthe
firsttimeoverthefield.Ninetythesecondtimeover(554).Notonlyarethefarmerspaying
themafarbelowreasonablewage,theyarealsomakingthempayawholedollarforabagtoput
thecottonin.Withtacticslikethesefarmerscontinuetokeeppeopleoppressed,whilethey
struggletomakeendsmeet.
However,notonlybadthingscamefromallofthismistreatment,familieswereableto
growcloserandunite.Inthecampseveryonesharedasimilarlife,fullofloss,hope,andthe
needtogetby.Forthesereasonsfamilieswereabletojointogether,inasceneSteinbeck
illustratesIntheeveningastrangethinghappenedthetwentyfamiliesbecameonefamily,the
childrenwerethechildrenofall(264).Themanyfamiliesbecameonefamily,sharingfood,
love,andhope,sincetheywereallinthesameboatonthesameriver.Andthegreatlandowners

anddeputiesknewthesepeople,whencomingtogether,werestrongerthananythingtheycould
imagine.Inalaterscenetheselandownersexpresstheirfearabouttheuprisingoftheoppressed,
Threehundredthousand,hungryandmiserableiftheyeverknowthemselves,thelandwillbe
theirsandallthegas,alltheriflesintheworldwontstopthem(325).Knowingitwasonlya
groupofoppressedthatcouldoverthrowthemtheirobjectivetomaintainauthoritywassimple
stoptheuprisingofagroupbeforetheycouldcauseanyproblems.Astimegrew,unitybetween
theoppressedgrew,andthelandownersknewitwasgrowingataratethatcouldntbehandled.
Throughstruggleandoppressionthesefamilieswereabletogrowtogetheranduniteasa
whole.Althoughtheywerepaidanunreasonablewagetheyarewereabletomakeitbywitha
littlehelpfromtheirfamilyandfriends,whoalsostruggledby.Byunitingtogethertheywere
abletogetbyaprovidefortheirfamilies.Oftenreferringneighborstonewjobswithbetter
money.Theyfoundhappinessandhopeknowingtheyweren'ttheonlyonesgoingthrough
struggle.Verymuchliketodaythepoorareshunnedbytherich,whilethepoorareablerelateto
oneanotheranduniteasonetomakeitthroughtheroughtimes.
