LIAM DODDS- VOCAL STYLES

POP
Pop is a style of music that has stemmed from many other
styles such as jazz in the early 20s; rock in the 50s and hip
hop in the 80s. The stylistic elements of pop include a midhigh laryngeal tilt allowing performers to transition through the
notes with a slight slide motion. Pop singers generally use a lot
of retraction and a breathy tone can also be present.
Stylistically, pop has an easy and memorable melody with a
basic riff, which will repeat itself throughout the song. Hence,
most pop songs being quite easy to remember or learn.
COUNTRY
Stemming from the West of the United States in the early
1920s, country music is a simple style that incorporates
elements of folk. Made famous in its recording years are
artists such as Dolly Parton, Keith Whitely, Kenny Rogers and
more. Technically, the style is quite lazy, with a very nasal
tone. The obvious slur in lyrics compliments a large amount of
twang that is what gives it that signature sound that everyone
can relate back to what Country is.
ROCK
A style of singing that requires quite a large vocal range, rock
music has elements of a classic technique to enhance the
power of the voice carrying over the loud instruments. Using a
high laryngeal tilt and a forward onset, a rock singer will use a
strong twang in falsetto when reaching high notes, adding the
to intensity of the overall song arch. Unlike other styles, rock
can get away with having a vocal fry, which allows the song to
have a rough aspect to it.
Rhythm & Blues
R&B is one of the only styles that have the freedom to use its
technical aspects lightly. This is because it is made up of a
range of other styles such as funk, soul and jazz. Along with
this, it is also inspired by traditional African American music.
R&B uses a low thyroid tilt, but a high laryngeal tilt, allowing
the freedom for riffs and improvisation. Artists performing this
style can also have a raspy tone at times.
GOSPEL
Originating from the African-American church scene, gospel
music is a full sound, which includes large vocal ranges and
free flowing movement. Using high retraction to create a
resinating sound, gospel also uses twang, which compliments

the clarity of its lyrics. Generally, gospel music aims to portray

a message or preach to mostly the Christian faith.
