PART- A
1 a Briefly discuss the vehicle characteristics which affect the road design.
b Compute the various resistances developed for a vehicle in motion and
obtain the engine HP required for a car of weight 2T required to
accelerate at a rate of 3m/sec2 in the 1st gear from a speed of 10
Kmph. The bitumen road is of +1% grade and the vehicle frontal area
is 2 m2.The tyre has a radius of 0.33 m and the rear axle gear ratio is
3.82:1 and the 1st gear ratio is 2.78:1.Assume transmission efficiency
as 0.9.

6 a What are the methods available for traffic forecasting? Explain any one
method with an example.
b Obtain the relationship if any between the accident severity and the
age of the driver from the accident data obtained for mysore road. Test
whether there is any significant relationship.

PART- C
7 a Discuss briefly the various traffic regulations practiced to control the
traffic.
b The average number of flow of traffic on roads A and B during design
period are 450 and 300 PCUs. The saturated flow estimated as 1400

and 1200 PCUs /hr respectively. The all red tune for pedestrians are
time taken as 12 sec. Design two phase signal by Webster method.
8 a Briefly enumerate the design factors of a rotary and label the parts of
a rotary with a neat sketch.
b Give the step wise procedure of street lighting design.
