ATHENAEUM OF PHILADELPHIA:
NATURE AS THE ORGANIZER

With the removal of the historical Athenaeum building, the site will be left as a void, a sacred green
space in a city that will grow denser with time. Green space will become Philadelphias new pride and
ornament. In the Athenaeum of 2050, nature will be the organizer in which the built space will be
incorporated. The green space will allow for both members and the public to have a tranquil place to
reflect and absorb the knowledge the future athenaeum will provide them with.

THE FORGOTTEN PORT

BALTIMORE, MD

Once recognized for its proximity to railroads and its waterfront which provided the perfect
location for recreation and commerce Westport is now a forgotten port. I will take its proximity to the
water and accentuate it by containing and conserving it within the site and the building. The building will
respond to two faces: one provides tenants with a connection to the water and the other connecting with
the plaza by creating a courtyard and drawing people in. The buildings shape invites one to turn the
corner and enjoy the plaza while also maximizing views to the water. This building will have the
opportunity to redefine the way people think of urban living by allowing them to experience the water
filtration process outdoors in a nice wetland garden, its roof rainwater garden, and in its heating. To
connect to the plaza, there will be a pond and courtyard to provide seating for those wanting to read a
book outside or drink a cup of coffee, in support of the shops on the lower level.

Mindfulness is a state of active open attention on the present, living in the moment, and awakening
to experience. Through the division of the program (the nutritional, physical, mindful, and educational
spaces), one can fully concentrate on the space theyre in, which in turn gives them priority and
improves focus. The quiet room is placed in the center of a courtyard to draw a connection between
the more animated and tranquil spaces. It floats above the trees and has slit windows that allows
peeks of sunlight to come in to maintain the intimacy of the space. These are all ways to give one the
feeling of connection to all living things and nature as a part of a larger whole, and to free one from
everyday burdens.
