Powerpoint lecture and worksheet

Motivation:

The motivation was difficult to discern other than the knowledge of the scholars that this
is a requirement for the course and the knowledge that this is information that is needed
to continue in the chemistry course.

Presentation: This lesson is a lecture style powerpoint on balancing chemical

equations. There is a worksheet that goes with the presentation for practice in completing
chemical equations.

Practice/Application: This lesson was purely lecture with very little interaction with

the scholars. I would have used this lesson as more of a discussion and launching pad for
interaction with the scholars. I have found that letting scholars have a say in the types of
reactions and equations that are created allows for greater levels of engagement.
Review/Assessment: As with all of the lessons I have observed, I again would have
liked to see a learning objective and/or word wall that the scholars could refer back to
while completing the assignments. There was little interaction between the teacher and
scholars, and I think the teacher took this as understanding of the lesson rather than a
lack of engagement. I would have had scholars come up to the board or work in small
groups to walk through the examples and then discuss the steps to completion. There was
very little discussion of the properties of the periodic table that are the backbone of
balancing chemical equations. As with all of the lessons I observed, it is obvious that my
goal as an administrator would be to get my teachers to express clear language objectives
and learning targets.
