Peel District School Board-Casual Teaching Assistants

Teaching Assistants provide support to students with a variety of special needs including
physical, developmental and behavioural. They work with these children with special needs
in a classroom setting, either in an integrated mainstream classroom or in a contained
classroom. Casual Teaching Assistants work on an "as needed" basis, filling in for staff who
are away or on leave. Assignments vary from one or two days up to one year. Permanent
positions, when available, are posted internally to the attention of all casual Teaching
Assistants. Teaching Assistants work during the school year only. There will be school shut
down periods at Christmas, March Break, and during the summer months when Teaching
Assistants do not work and are not paid.
Teaching Assistant Qualifications:
All Peel District School Board Teaching Assistants require one of the following
degrees/diplomas:
Educational Assistant diploma/Educational Support diploma, Development Service Worker
diploma, Child and Youth Worker diploma, Community and Justice diploma, Corrections
Worker diploma, Developmental Disabilities Worker diploma, Intervenor for Deaf-Blind
Persons diploma, Post-ECE Advanced Studies in Special Needs diploma, Social Service
Worker

In addition to these qualifications, candidates must have experience working with children
with special needs. Although not necessary, school-based experience is a definite asset.
Candidates must also be able to perform the essential physical duties of the positions, such
as lifting and transferring children and equipment. Candidates must have a demonstrated
commitment to working in a diverse school community and/or work environment.

Criminal Record Check:
For the safety of students, successful candidates will be required to submit a
satisfactorycriminal record check prior to the commencement of any employment duties.
Recent changes made by the RCMP have resulted in significant processing delays for some
candidates. You may wish to start the process to obtain your criminal record check as soon
as possible.
