Lesson Plan TWO


Name of Lesson: How does my family celebrate?
Learning intention: What is important to my family and my
familys origins and culture.
This experience is for the students to
gain a deeper understanding of why
and how their family celebrate certain
holidays or events. They will be able to
compare the similarities and differences
of each student to create a stronger
sense of identity.

The Lesson:
Introduction: Students brainstorm questions that will seek
information from their families about significant celebrations.
E.g;

What is your favourite celebration day?


What food do you eat throughout the day?
What clothes do you wear?
What is type of music do you listen to? Why?
What traditions do you have for the day that no one else has?
What traditions for the day do you have that everyone has?
What is your best memory/memories for this celebration?
What does this celebration mean to you?
Do you know the history of that celebration?

Investigate:
Each students describes their personal celebrations to a
partner using the responses they have collected to the
questions.
The partner is required to listen and record this oral
perspective. They need to put themselves in the shoes of
their partner to retell their stories.

Students are asked to depict this through drawing, cartoon


etc and use written text to portray the partners
story/celebration.
Share with the class:

Discussion:
After all the stories have been shared, ask students to write
three statements;
One: How is my celebration similar to others?
Two: How is my celebration different to others?
Three: Choose a celebration of one of your classmates and
describe how it is important?
Pull out the key similarities and add to the students key
understandings. Use prior knowledge ideas and begin to clarify.
Written statements can be put onto strips of paper (this may be
added to wondering wall when developed)
Assessment:
Are students able to record the story/ celebration of a partner?
Have they shown empathy, sensitivity to another persons
celebration?
Have they described similarities or differences and written a
statement that shows an understanding of its importance.
